Established over half a century ago, the Armed Forces and Police Mutual Benefit Association, Inc. (AFPMBAI) traces its roots to the honorable tradition of “abuluyan” within the uniformed services, embodying their unwavering dedication and commitment to a broader mission: safeguarding the freedom and sovereignty of the Filipino people, often at personal sacrifice.
What began as modest donations to honor fallen service members has evolved into AFPMBAI’s role as a champion of economic stability and well-being for its expanding membership, which now includes not only the military but also the Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine National Police, Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, Bureau of Corrections and various other organizations. As of 2023, the Association boasts a membership exceeding 400,000, comprising both active and retired personnel.
To ensure the diverse voices within the uniformed community are heard, the AFPMBAI Board of Trustees comprises representatives from different service branches, with the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines serving as the board chairman. This strategic composition aligns the Association’s initiatives with its overarching objectives, addressing the pressing needs for well-being and financial security across all uniformed sectors.
A distinctive advantage offered by AFPMBAI is its comprehensive insurance coverage for uniformed personnel (MUP) and military members, specifically tailored to duty-related events, such as fatalities and injuries arising from conflict, insurrection, and armed forces or police operations, setting it apart from conventional private insurance providers.
Furthermore, AFPMBAI enhances accessibility through strategically positioned Regional Sales and Service Centers (RSSCs) nationwide, serving as one-stop shops for processing benefit claims, insurance and loan applications, and claims for deaths.
Supplementing the RSSCs are numerous partner payment centers and digital wallets, facilitating convenient bill settlements and access to member benefits.
As of 2022, AFPMBAI has assets amounting to P38.7 billion, making it the largest and strongest mutual benefit association in the nation. With an audited net income before taxes reaching P1.14 billion, P2.1 billion distributed as dividends since 1981, and P1.7 billion disbursed in living benefits in 2022 alone, AFPMBAI stands as a beacon of financial strength and responsibility.
The Association has allocated P2 billion for corporate social responsibility activities since 2012, with a focus on general welfare, health, and education. Among its significant contributions in 2023 are the transient facility for the Philippine Army and the launch of the Philippine National Police grandstand in Quezon province. The Grants for Dependents (GRADE) Scholarship Program, sponsoring 80 scholars and disbursing P44 million as of 2023, has played a vital role in supporting the education of deceased MUP members’ dependents, benefitting 300 graduates.
Additionally, AFPMBAI invests in the health and general welfare of its members by providing a spectrum of medical, emergency, physical fitness, administration, and operations equipment, along with service vehicles to different uniformed sectors.
These accomplishments have propelled AFPMBAI to the fourth position out of 32 mutual benefit associations in the country. Having been honored twice with the prestigious Golden Arrow Award in 2022 and 2023, while maintaining an outstanding performance rating in good governance of over 80% as recognized by the Institute of Corporate Directors—an approved assessor of the Insurance Commission—AFPMBAI stands as the Philippines’ most stalwart leader among mutual benefit organizations. The Association’s steadfast commitment to upholding corporate governance principles, coupled with its adherence to mission-defining values of selflessness, devotion, and dedication, underscores its enduring role as a standard of excellence in the mutual benefit landscape.
